Frankenthaler and Judd together: what Dutch museums collected
Editors ·
Frankenthaler / Judd is already on view at Kunsthal KAdE. The exhibition links two artists of the same generation to a difference in Dutch museum collections.

Frankenthaler / Judd has been on view at Kunsthal KAdE in Amersfoort since 26 September 2026. The current exhibition page says it runs through 10 January 2027. This is an exhibition already open, not a future opening.
Helen Frankenthaler and Donald Judd were both born in 1928 and became prominent in postwar New York. KAdE sets Frankenthaler’s free forms and intuition beside Judd’s strict visual language. The comparison is also about collecting: who found a place in Dutch museums?
According to KAdE, major Dutch museums together hold more than forty works by Judd, including nineteen sculptures. Until recently, the Stedelijk held only one Frankenthaler print; in 2025 it acquired two paintings. KAdE connects this imbalance to a male preference in postwar Dutch collection policy.

Two large aluminium Judd sculptures, one from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and one from the Stedelijk, stand together for the first time since their acquisitions, KAdE says. The room becomes a concrete comparison of decisions made by different museums.
Kunsthal KAdE is at Eemplein 77 and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Its visitor page lists adult admission at €20 including a €3 supplement; Museumkaart holders pay the €3 supplement. Sunday introductory tours are included with admission. Our photos show the building and square, not copyrighted artworks by either artist.
