One last weekend for Kho Liang Ie at the Stedelijk
The Kho Liang Ie survey closes on 18 October. His furniture, graphic work and Schiphol design are central to the exhibition.

Only one weekend remains to see Kho Liang Ie — Mid-Century Modernist at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. According to the museum, the exhibition runs from 14 May through Sunday 18 October 2026. Friday 16 October begins the exhibition’s final weekend. The Stedelijk calls it the first major museum survey of the designer, whose work spanned furniture, interiors and graphic design.
Kho Liang Ie was born in 1927 in Magelang, Indonesia, into a family of Chinese descent. He moved to the Netherlands in 1949 and studied interior architecture at the predecessor of the Rietveld Academy. According to the Stedelijk, the work he produced from the 1950s to the mid-1970s found a distinctive place in Dutch design. The museum describes a playful, poetic approach to rigorous modernism, visible in the way he handled materials and space.

The Stedelijk cites commissions for Bruynzeel, Mosa and the furniture makers CAR and Artifort. More than two hundred objects and images reveal different sides of his practice. Part of a Schiphol interior and a stand for Artifort are also presented. Strijkers Studio, led by Eline Strijkers, designed the exhibition space.
A major commission came in 1963, when Kho was asked to design the interior of the new Schiphol building. It opened four years later. According to the museum, he took account of travellers who might feel anxious at the entrance: access needed to feel smooth and without barriers.
The museum also presents Kho’s work as a body of furniture, interiors and graphic design. He died in 1975 at the age of 47; this retrospective therefore looks back at his designs from a distance of more than half a century.
The Stedelijk is at Museumplein 10 in Amsterdam. According to its visitor information, it opens daily from 10 am to 6 pm, with no admission after 5.45 pm. The website lists tickets at €22.50 for adults and €12.50 for students and CJP members; admission is free up to and including age 18. Its FAQ says tickets are available online only. Museumkaart holders can book a free ticket online.
Booking in advance makes sense for the final weekend, since the closing date is fixed. The Stedelijk says it opens earlier than 10 am on some days, so rely on the time slot you book. Photographs of Kho Liang Ie’s work are protected by copyright. The two Commons images show the museum building and do not indicate which objects will be in the galleries from 16 to 18 October.
