Recognise first
Start with what you think you recognise in a work: a figure, an object or a space. Then see whether the proportions and the setting fit that first impression. You do not need to be able to name an art movement to notice differences.
Then look again
An unexpected combination can change your first reading. Give yourself time to explore which details do this. The information with the work can then help you understand the artist’s choice.
A museum with activities
