From the rack to the courtroom
Prints, scale models and old instruments of punishment show changing ideas about guilt and punishment. Set a historical instrument beside the judge’s chair and note who made the decisions and who carried them out.
Step inside a cell yourself
A punishment cell, sleeping cages, a dome-prison set-up and a modern cell block give the restriction of freedom a spatial form. Pay attention to light, sightlines, sound and room to move rather than just the bars.
Veenhuizen as a system
The village history up to 1980 sets living, working and guarding side by side. Use a map to see how institutions and daily life were organised within the same environment.
Before you go
During the school holidays of all regions, the museum may also be open on Mondays. Separate conditions may apply to rides, guided tours or ‘Het Staatshotel’.
