Type before there is a page
The printing works’ description mentions type cases, typesetting machines and presses. Together these show the difference between composing text and printing it. Start with the type and follow in the explanations which steps are needed next.
Presses in various forms
The machines mentioned include a Juliën press and equipment from Monotype, Intertype and Heidelberg. You do not need to know these names already. At a machine, ask what work it does and what sets it apart from the set-up next to it.
Making a print yourself
Museum Joure mentions printing a bookmark on a platen press as a visitor activity. Check on site when guidance is available. The copper plates for maps of Friesland that are described are also a reason to look at the relationship between printing forme and print.
