Rooms that belong together
The guided tour takes you through an interior focused on the seventeenth century. Look not only at individual pieces of furniture, but at the relationship between passageways, sightlines, wall finishes and the function of a room.
The gatehouse
Even before the rooms, the distinctive gatehouse sets the tone of your arrival. Look at how the entrance is designed and which boundary it marks between village, forecourt and the enclosed grounds of the estate (state).
The garden on the same ticket
The garden is included with a guided-tour ticket. Do not treat it as just an extra: look back from outside at the façade and windows and compare that view with the route you have just followed inside.
Before you go
In July and August there are guided tours at fixed start times; at other times you need to make an appointment in advance. The grounds are listed as closed on Sundays and public holidays.
