Working model layouts

A model layout brings together train, track, station and landscape. Follow one train for a full circuit and watch the points, signals and stops; this shows how the makers organised movement and timetable.

The Scheltema collection

Dutch model trains from the core collection form a second way in. Compare scale, material and level of detail in two models and see which features are needed to make the full-size original instantly recognisable.

The store behind the display

Less than a fifth of the collection is said to be on show at any one time. That makes every selection temporary and deliberate: ask what choice lies behind a display case or layout and why these particular models are grouped together.

Before you go

From 1 May 2026, an adjusted weekly schedule applies. The whole museum is on one level and wheelchair accessible; ordinary dogs are not allowed.
