Recognition and estrangement
Realism is one of the collecting areas. For a work, look first at what is recognisable, then at what holds your attention. A quiet composition or an unusual proportion can raise questions that the caption can help you explore further.
A piece of jewellery as an artwork
Contemporary jewellery is also part of the collection. Look at how a small object uses space. Its relationship with the body is one possible way in, but also ask what the maker is exploring through material and form.
Further into the garden
The freely accessible sculpture garden offers a different environment from the galleries. Walk around a sculpture when possible and compare what becomes visible from different viewpoints. Which works can be seen indoors depends on the current programme.
Before you go
The museum galleries, café and sculpture garden have different access conditions. Check public holidays and the current exhibitions.
