Oergrond beneath Nijmegen
In the underground route, geology, fossils and traces of building come together. Follow the layers literally downward and note which remains are original to the site and which have been added as museum objects.
A defensive tower preserved
The sixteenth-century bastion, known as the Stratemakerstoren, is itself a key part of the museum. Look at the brickwork and its position relative to the river before you read the reconstruction.
Schatkamer van de Rivier
Flora, fauna and an extensive natural-history collection show the Waal as a habitat. Compare one natural specimen with the urban interventions explained elsewhere in the museum.
Before you go
The museum is open daily 10.00–17.00, closed on four named public and event days, with early closing on 24 and 31 December.
