From pushing off to pedalling
Early walking and pedal bicycles make technical steps directly comparable. Look at wheel size, pedal and brake position, and work out which problem each design tried to solve.
Height and balance
The penny-farthing draws attention through its size, but also study the mounting step, saddle and drive. This makes clear why speed and safety did not automatically go together.
Unusual solutions
Special cycles show side paths in the development of the bicycle. The collection is spread over several floors; only part of it is reachable without stairs.
