Start with the components
The museum information and the monument description list the boiler house, the engine house and the chimney separately. Try to recognise the large components first. That gives you something to hold on to before you delve into the technical names of smaller parts.
A machine with a task
The pumping station described combines a steam engine with an Archimedean screw. You can recognise such a screw by its helical shape. During your visit, ask how the motion is transmitted and which part moves the water. In this way a complicated installation becomes a series of understandable steps.
Open does not automatically mean running
Visiting hours do not tell you whether an installation is actually running. If it is the machinery at work you want to see, it is worth looking out for a demonstration or a special open day. Even when it is at a standstill, you can ask questions about how the components are connected.
Before you go
Check with the custodian both the opening times and any days when the machinery is running. Ask about accessibility in advance if stairs or thresholds are an obstacle for you.
