Look at the script, material, binding and traces of use where possible. Ask how the dating was arrived at and which parts are original, restored or added later.
Textiles call for slow looking
With church textiles, stitching, wear and repairs tell as much as colour or image. Find out what function a piece had and on which occasions it was worn.
Treasury and basilica
A combined visit links objects with the space in which similar objects were used. Keep the museum’s explanation and the church’s current religious function separate.
Before you go
From 1 May to 1 October the treasury is open on Thursday 13.00–16.00; outside that season mainly by appointment. One secondary source sometimes states appointment only, so check in advance.
