From tool to trade
Look at a tool and ask which craft it belongs to. Which actions can you recognise from its shape? Ask which other tools were used for the same work. This lets you see objects in context, without deducing their function solely from where they are placed in the display.
Power in different forms
A steam engine and a Deutz engine prompt a discussion of different ways of powering machinery. Ask how their workings are explained. The presence of a machine does not mean that it runs during every regular visit; announced steam days matter for that.
Transport gets space too
Tractors, motor cars and a Unic lorry broaden the subject to vehicles. Compare the task a vehicle had to perform with the work of the machines inside. This also gives a route past large objects coherence in content.
Before you go
In the season there is walk-in access from Thursday to Sunday. Confirm the winter cut-off date and the children’s rate when planning.
