UvA Computermuseum preserves working computing history

At Science Park, scientific computers, mechanical calculators and slide rules stand alongside original software, only during guided tours that have been requested.

Plan your visit ↗

Calculating before electronics

Compare the slide rule and the mechanical machine in terms of input, accuracy and the user’s knowledge. This makes clear which tasks computers later speeded up or automated.

Hardware with software

A working computer only tells its full story with a program and a data carrier. For one system, ask which operating system, medium and maintenance are needed to demonstrate it today.

Data from old media

The Data Atelier can read punched cards, paper tape and magnetic media. That work shows that preservation also covers interfaces, documentation and interpretation.

Before you go

No public timetable: only after a written request, usually in a monthly guided tour for a small group.
