From hand power to motor
Compare an early vacuum cleaner with a later appliance and look at weight, airflow and controls. New technology reduced some tasks but also brought maintenance and electricity with it.
Washing before the automatic machine
A wooden tub and an early washing machine make visible the steps that a modern programme hides. Follow soaking, agitating, rinsing, wringing and drying as separate tasks.
Rooms from the 1950s and 1960s
A reconstructed living room and bathroom put the appliances back into a domestic setting. Notice where water, storage and sockets are, and what was still done by hand.
