Spiral staircase with vaults
The brick newel staircase and Gothic cross vaults make the building technique directly visible. Take your time on the steps and note the transition between load-bearing structure and decoration.
From tower to cell
The tower contains, among other things, prison cells from 1769. For each room, ask which function has been documented for which period; a single tower room may have been used differently over the centuries.
No visit without climbing
Numerous stairs make the tower unsuitable for people who have difficulty walking. Tower wardens are present on weekday afternoons from Wednesday to Sunday; the earlier note “by appointment only” is out of date.
Before you go
The tower follows the museum's opening days but does not open until 13.00; check public holidays and assess in advance whether the stairs are manageable for you.
