Listening to the mechanism
An instrument that plays by itself invites you to look at how it works. During a demonstration, notice what moves and how that coincides with the music. The explanation offers a way into the technology without you needing to know it beforehand.
From small to large
The collection ranges from music boxes to street organs and orchestrions. Compare their scale and sound, but also the setting they were intended for. A small instrument often calls for a different way of listening from a large one.
Plan around the guided tour
The musical guided tours have fixed start times and form an important part of the visit. Check them on arrival so that you don’t only see silent instruments. The museum has ramps and lifts; a mobility aid on loan is best reserved in advance.
