Tools with a task
Woodworking and shipbuilding tools offer a concrete way into the work. Also look at machines such as a pillar drill and a band saw. Ask what operation is carried out with them, so that the tools become more than a collection of shapes.
Understanding the site
The slipways and sheds belong to the yard as a whole. See how the parts together form a working environment. When restoration work is under way, follow the instructions; a museum visit does not give free access to every workplace.
Within the season
The regular opening is on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons during the season, from spring to autumn. Open days may have longer hours. Groups make an appointment and check the available days; not every public holiday is possible for this.
