Period rooms as a whole
Look at the wall finishes, chimneypiece and arrangement of furniture as a single ensemble. Ask which elements belong to the house and which were collected later.
Living with status
Details in materials and decoration show a desire to impress. Describe what is visible first, before drawing conclusions about the former occupants.
Before you go
Open Wednesday–Sunday 13.00–17.00; closed on Monday and Tuesday. The house also closes on several public holidays, including King’s Day, Ascension Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. The historic building is not wheelchair accessible and payment is by debit card only.
