Choosing a material
Start, for example, with ceramics or lacquerware and look at shape and finish. Then read the explanation about origin and use. That way a broad collecting field becomes accessible without you needing to know Japanese art history already.
Art and nature side by side
The combination of cultural objects and flora and fauna reflects the breadth of the collection. Ask how the museum links these parts. Temporary exhibitions may also highlight a specific maker or theme.
Another entrance without stairs
The main entrance has steps. A rear entrance is available for wheelchairs, rollators and pushchairs, and there is a lift to the galleries. Also check special closures, including Leidens Ontzet (Relief of Leiden) and private events.
