DISCO turns the museum hall into a dance floor
Wereldmuseum Amsterdam shows how disco grew out of Black, Latino and queer underground clubs in New York into a movement about freedom, inclusivity and self-expression. The exhibition has been open since 10 October.

In DISCO you dance your way past hundreds of tracks, videos, art, fashion and design. In an interactive installation you can also make a remix yourself.
The exhibition places disco at its origins in Black, Latino and queer underground clubs in New York. According to the museum, in the 1970s the music grew into a movement centred on freedom, inclusivity and self-expression.

Alongside art and fashion, there are musical instruments and equipment on show: a MiniMoog synthesizer, a Roland drum machine and a guitar signed by Nile Rodgers. The exhibition also presents work by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Kwame Brathwaite, Michael Abramson and Meryl Meisler, among others.
For the exhibition, a floor of 835 square metres at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam turns into one big dance floor.
DISCO runs at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam from 10 October 2026 to 22 August 2027.
