Henry Chalfant kept the train from disappearing

ART IS NOT A CRIME opens at STRAAT Museum on 9 October. Photographs of painted New York subway cars show how temporary street work became a lasting archive.

A painted subway train does not stand still to be studied. That is why Henry Chalfant photographed whole trains in New York during the 1970s and 1980s. From 9 October 2026, STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam presents his work in ART IS NOT A CRIME, on view through 13 March 2027.

The exhibition conveys that scale. According to the museum, a life-size painted train enters on an LED wall, while a wall more than 25 metres long displays over five hundred photographs of complete subway trains. Full-size reproductions give this fleeting work back the space it occupied in the street.

Chalfant did more than preserve images: he helped circulate a visual language. With Martha Cooper he made the 1984 book Subway Art. That same year he exhibited at Amsterdam’s Yaki Kornblit gallery. STRAAT says teenagers photographed the show, copied the pictures and spread them further.

Dutch graffiti history therefore has a place of its own. Dutch Graffiti Library is guest curator and contributes archival material; SUSO33 curated the exhibition. Alongside train photographs, the museum lists sketchbooks, flyers, press clippings, audio recordings and video. The subject is both the image on the carriage and the network that carried it onward.

STRAAT is at NDSM-Plein 1. The exhibition is included with a regular museum ticket; a signing session with Chalfant is scheduled for Saturday 10 October from 2.30 to 4.30 pm. Visitors can see work that might otherwise have vanished with the next train.
