The children in the work of Jan Sluijters
Het Noordbrabants Museum brings together a large number of child portraits by Jan Sluijters. The exhibition follows both his own children and children he painted on commission.

Jan Sluijters painted children from his own circle and children of clients. The exhibition De kinderen van Sluijters (The Children of Sluijters) turns the spotlight on this part of his oeuvre, which the museum calls long underrated.
He portrayed his four own children — Louise, Jan, Robert and Elisa — again and again, from babyhood to adolescence. Their personal stories are part of the exhibition, alongside the paintings themselves.

Portraits of children of clients are included as well. The museum reports that a large number of these works are shown together for the first time. Some had not been on public display before; others lay in museum storage for a long time.
The museum invites visitors to take a fresh look at this overlooked part of Sluijters’s work.
De kinderen van Sluijters can be seen from 3 October 2026 to 21 February 2027 at Het Noordbrabants Museum, Verwersstraat 41 in ’s-Hertogenbosch. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
