Museum Gouda has occupied the former Catharina Gasthuis since 1947. According to the museum, the building’s history goes back to the fourteenth century; it served as a hospital until the twentieth. The pharmacy, surgeon’s room and hidden cellar also tell of its earlier functions.

According to the museum website, the permanent collection includes sixteenth-century altar paintings preserved in Gouda while many other Dutch altarpieces were lost during the iconoclasm. The museum also lists seventeenth-century militia paintings, art of the Hague School and ceramics. Together, these different materials make the city’s history visible.

The main entrance to Museum Gouda is at Oosthaven 9. The museum’s visitor information lists opening hours from 11 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. According to the same page, it is about a twelve-minute walk from Gouda Centraal station.
